The first thing most tourists notice about Malta are the relics of the country?s rich history still standing in the streets. There are numerous historical and cultural sites tourists can visit in Malta and almost all are easily accessible. There are many prehistoric temples in Malta which are said to have been constructed a millennium before the Egyptians built the pyramids. The Hypogeum is an underground structure that was used as catacombs way back in 3600 BC. There are also the Tarxien temples; the oldest temple is dated to have been constructed in 3100 BC. There are many more ancient sites in Malta, make sure you visit at least one or you cannot say your vacation is complete.

The Republic of Malta lies in Southern Europe, in the Mediterranean Sea and is composed of seven islands, which makes it an archipelago. This island nation enjoys warm climate; the winters are not as cold compared to other countries in Europe and the summers are hot. If you plan to visit Malta during the summer, make sure you are ready for dry, warm breezes and do not expect rain to fall during the season. There are times when the sirocco can make Malta feel like an oven and the temperature could rise as high as 38 degrees Celsius.

The languages spoken in Malta are Maltese and English. English being their second language means tourists will have no trouble asking for directions if they find themselves lost in the streets of Malta. The Maltese archipelago was once a colony of Britain, which explains why the nation?s official second language is English. This is also the reason why many English language students travel to Malta and various international corporations hold summits, conferences and other important business meetings in this Mediterranean archipelago.

The national currency formerly used in Malta was the Maltese Lira. However, when the world entered the year 2008, the Euro became the country?s prime currency. As of February 2008, hotels, shops and other establishments will no longer accept Maltese Lira. Before heading out on the streets of Malta, make sure you exchange your pocket money to Euro or you will be having trouble transacting any sort of business during your stay.

According to the World Fact book, about 98 percent of the population in Malta is Roman Catholic, one of the highest Catholic populations in the world. For this reason, expect to see numerous churches and cathedrals scattered all throughout the archipelago. There?s the San Lawrenz Church in Birgu, the Gozo cathedral, the Rotunda of St Marija Assunta, also known as the Mosta Dome and many others you may want to visit during you stay in Malta.

The main mode of transportation in Malta is by bus. Car rental is also possible but using public transpiration vehicles is not the bad since almost every place in Malta is reachable by bus. Since Malta is an archipelago, ferries are also used to get around, especially during summer time. If you plan on renting a car, remember that you?ll be driving by British standards, which means that you drive on the left and the steering wheel is placed on the right side of the car.

Most who plan on traveling internationally probably know that new travel document requirements have been in place since January of 2007. Additionally, new regulations take effect in January of 2008. Here are some key considerations to make your preparations easier.

PASSPORTS: Because of new regulations required by the Homeland Security Act, passports are now required for air travel in Western Hemisphere countries that were previously exempt. Beginning in January 2008 those regulations extend to land and sea travel as well.

If you have never before obtained a passport, the procedures may be a little intimidating, but it’s very simple if you thoroughly research and complete the requirements well ahead of your anticipated travel date. Waiting too late and having to hurry or pay extra for expedited service simply adds to the pressure and the costs. Consider the following steps and resources.

? Begin the process of obtaining a passport and required visas well in advance of your travel date – by as much as 6 months.

? Thoroughly research passport and visa requirements. Do not assume anything. Requirements may change without much warning.

? Obtain the application, one for each member of the family that is traveling, including children and infants. As always, check the most up-to-date sources because requirements change. Ask questions. The applications may be obtained from many US Post Offices but must be delivered only to specified US Post Offices. See below for the link to the official US government site for specifics.

? Obtain 2 official passport pictures. Most portrait photographers can supply these, including Wal-Mart Stores that maintain a photography studio. Some US Post offices also offer photography services.

? Save your money for the occasion. The total passport fee is just under $100, not including the passport pictures. If you have to expedite the process, costs may be 2 or 3 times as much.

VISAS: Before you travel to a foreign country, check with the embassy or consulate of the country that you plan to visit. Ask specifically for their visa requirements. Be sure to mention the date of travel, because requirements change from time to time and you must comply with current regulations. The U.S. Department of State maintains a web site that contains information about visa requirements, but it may not be up to date.

Again, this is something you want to start on early in your planning stages because it may take you a few weeks to contact the appropriate agency and to receive response back. If you are required to secure a visa, that too will take time.

As with any official documents, when you receive them, check them carefully for accuracy. You do not want to be held up at the ticket counter or the customs gate because of what may seem to you to be an insignificant spelling or typo mistake. No mistakes are insignificant.

Just a word of encouragement with documentation. Carry with you always your personal picture ID and birth certificate and copies of your required documentation. If you are for any reason stopped at a checkpoint because of some inconsistency in paperwork, additional copies and more-than-required documentation may save you time and hassle. And, last of all, looking at the overall picture, a very low percentage of travelers experience any problems with documentation. Follow the requirements. Do not attempt to skip steps, and you’ll be just fine.

Whether you’re an American on vacation, or you’re planning a holiday in the United States, Boston, Massachusetts is a city that you might want to visit.

It doesn’t have the Broadway plays and glitzy shopping of New York City down the coast, but this city is steeped in United States history… as in the “Boston Tea Party” steeped in history. OK Enough for bad puns.

It is one of the oldest cities in the United States…. founded in 1630 by the pilgrims from England if you really want to know. (Not the pilgrims that come over on the Mayflower to Plymouth, by the way.)

During the United States Revolution several major battles took place here… the Battle of Bunker Hill is one of the most famous. The Battles of Lexington and Concord were fought nearby. It was from the Old North Church that Paul Revere took his famous “midnight ride” crying the warning of the approach of the British….. As the poem goes,

“…One if by land, and two if by sea;

And I on the opposite shore will be,

Ready to ride and spread the alarm

Through every Middlesex village and farm…..”

Walk the Freedom Trail. This two and a half mile route will help you get acquainted with the city and efficiently visit many of the city’s historic landmarks. Allow yourself at least three hours for this tour… a full day to really see everything would be better. If walking isn’t for you, there are trolley tours that will let you hop on and hop off at the sites.

Stroll through the historic Public Garden. It is adjacent to the Boston Common and is the nation’s oldest botanical garden. Ride one of the famous Swan Boats… Locals and visitors have been riding in them during the summer months since 1877.

See the Faneuil Hall marketplace… also known as Quincy market. For over 250 years, the marketplace has played an integral role in the life of this city’s residents. This indoor-outdoor market is still a great place for shopping and dining.

Eat in the Union Oyster House, the city’s oldest restaurant. Walk through the “burying grounds”, the cemeteries. You can find the graves of several famous early Americans.

Visit the colleges and universities… there are several in the area. Harvard, just across the Charles River in Cambridge might be the most famous. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the U.S. You can also visit, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Brandeis University among a couple of dozen others nearly as well known.

In the summertime, sit on the green along the Charles River and listen to the Boston Pops play in the Hatch Shell… a wonderful free concert. If you’re there for the July 4th concert you’ll hear Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture complete with cannons and fireworks. (You’ll need to be there plenty early for that popular concert!)

Boston has great museums, and there are more across the river in Cambridge around Harvard. There are sports teams for baseball, basketball, football and ice hockey fans, and there is always shopping.

It’s a great starting point to explore the USA’s New England states. With all it has going for it, give Boston a look when you’re making travel plans.

Airport security rules have changed drastically in recent years. With air travel increasing greatly around the holidays anyone considering going this route is well advised to familiarize themselves with new rules put in place where they may cause the most delays. Namely airport security checkpoints.

Most passengers may think there is only one security checkpoint, when in reality there are usually three. This may vary from airport to airport but this seems to be the rule for most.

The first checkpoint will be when you register for your seat on the plane. You will need to show at least one proper form of identification. Usually a drivers license or a government issued identification card will suffice. You will then be given your boarding pass.

This is also the time when you will need to hand over the luggage that you will be checking for storage below the plane. These are commonly referred to as checked bags or luggage. To avoid delays you should check with the airline for specific items that may be banned or prohibited. In the past, only a small number of bags were hand checked, but now almost all are.

Many of these checks are quick look-overs, but you may be subject to a random, extensive search. This search often includes the checking of all baggage compartments, as well as the wiping of a cloth, which is looking for powdery substances.

Once through this stage you will encounter the main airport security checkpoint. This is where you will be asked to have your carryon luggage xrayed and you will have to go through a metal detector. Also currently all travelers are being asked to remove their shoes to have them xrayed too. In the past people where picked randomly for this excercise but now the only exception is of those with a disability or hindering medical condition.

Again, by familiarizing yourself with the items that are banned aboard an airplane, including items that are only prohibited from being stored in your carryon luggage, an unnecessary incident can be prevented.

In the event that you are found carrying a prohibited item, certain steps will be taken. Depending on the item in question, you may be required to return the item to you car, discard it, mail it to your home, or turn it over to airport security. Ensuring that you leave all prohibited items at home is the best way to prevent this unnecessary delay, which may cause you to miss your flight or even worse scenarios.

There is one final checkpoint to pass before boarding your flight. When entering the airport terminal, after your airline has granted permission for passengers to board, you will need to present airline officials with the appropriate boarding pass. At this time you may need to show your identification again. However, it is not always necessary.

It is best that you stay calm during all airport checkpoints, including the final boarding stage. Most travelers are easily able to board their airplane, but in the event that you are acting suspicious or drawing unwanted attention to yourself you may be pulled aside. So leave the anxieties at the door.

By being prepared and knowledgeable about what is and is not acceptable before ever entering the airport you will avoid unwanted delays and experience a much more pleasant flight.
